A Note from the Editor
By Preston Gralla
Chief Information Officers and IT managers are caught in a bind when it comes to greening the data center. On the one hand, they've been issued directives from top corporate management to turn IT green. On the other hand, those new directives usually don't come with increased budgets.
Ironically, greening IT saves enterprises money in the long run, so larger budgets today would be justified as a way of reducing costs tomorrow. Despite that, though, IT won't see green-related budget increases for quite some time, if at all.
What to do? Larry Pepper, senior practice manager for EMC Infrastructure Consulting, offers advice on how you help green your data center today, while working within your existing budget. He offers a four-step methodology for getting it done, and gives real-world examples showing how it pays off. Read his piece, and then let me know if you have any advice to add as well --- we're always looking for columnists who can offer hard-won, practical tips.
