CHICAGO, Ill. -- Digital Realty Trust broke new ground for data centers last week when its facility in Chicago became the first to earn the U.S. Green Building Council's Gold-level certification.
DRT's Gold-level certification is the second highest LEED category, which recognizes a range of energy- and resource-saving measures in building construction, and ranges from LEED Certified to LEED Platinum.
The data center, at 350 East Cernak Road in Chicago, includes 20,000 square feed of raised-floor space and can handle 4,000 kW of IT load. In a statement, DRT's CEO, Michael F. Foust, said the certification sets a new benchmark for data centers, and shows how his company's corporate customers can improve their bottom line while increasing their commitment to the environment.
One significant aspect of the 90-year-old Cernak Road facility is that it is a renovated facility rather than new construction. DRT's VP of engineering, Jim Smith, said this project "shatters the myth" that LEED projects are best suited for new construction.
The company said it has several other facilities currently in the process to become LEED certified, including a 54,000 square foot data center in Chicago and two 30,000 square foot facilities in Santa Clara, Calif., and northern Virginia.
