FRAMINGHAM, -- Staples is making recycled, sustainably-sourced paper the standard product at its 1,400 Copy & Print Centers in the United States.
The office supplies giant announced this week it will start using 50 percent post-consumer recycled content paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for black and white copy and print jobs.
The FSC is an international organization with national chapters in the U.S. and more than 40 other countries.
Founded in 1992, the FSC has certified 242 million acres of forests worldwide as of February 2008. To be certified, a forest or plantation must comply with a number of environmental, social and economic criteria.
Staples offers a number of other FSC-certified products, including paper with 100 percent post-consumer content. Among its environmental goals, Staples plans to switch the majority of its paper products to FSC-certified alternatives by 2010.
The company has already increased the average amount of post-consumer recycled content in all of its paper products from less than 20 percent in 2003 to 30 percent in 2006.
