LONDON, UK -- Green IT is quickly become a higher priority, with more than 75 percent of firms surveyed for a new report saying that eco-friendly computing is an important part of their IT operations and 15 percent saying it's their top priority.
"2008 Trends to Watch: Green IT," by London market analyst Datamonitor, surveyed 245 chief information officers and IT managers.
One out of five companies surveyed said they have already adopted greener computing methods and one-third have plans to put green IT measures in place in the coming years. The report predicts a surge in interest in green IT due to technological advances, smaller budgets, increasing infrastructure footprints and tighter waste disposal and data privacy regulations.
The report predicts specific areas that will see growth, including virtualization, IT recycling and low-carbon technologies. Of the companies with green IT measures in place, one-third have used virtualization to reduce costs and energy use, and more than two-thirds have recycling programs.
