Swapping PCs for Thin Client Terminals Slashes Enterprise's Energy Use, Emissions

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Enterprise Rent-a-Car will finish switching out PCs for thin client terminals in its rental locations this summer to streamline car rental transactions and slash emissions and energy consumption.

The company expects the ECARS 2.0 system will help it cut carbon dioxide emissions by 6.5 million pounds each year, largely due to the savings in energy consumption. A PC, for instance, consumes 77.1 watt-hours while in an active state, compared to the 13.6 watt-hours consumed by thin clients.

"This system produces tremendous operational efficiencies, but it was important to us to maximize environmental efficiencies as well," said Craig Kennedy, Enterprise's chief information officer. "One of the key choices we made in developing the ECARS 2.0 system was going with thin client terminals. It's a choice that will soon provide a big payoff by increasing our energy efficiency and reducing our company's overall environmental footprint."

The number of ECARS 2.0 thin client terminals will top 45,000 and operate through 743 terminal servers. The network will connect more than 7,000 rental offices in the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Germany and Puerto Rico, and was developed with assistance from HP.
