IBM Unveils New Software for Data Center Energy Management

ARMONK, N.Y. -- IBM's latest version of Tivoli Monitoring software combines details of energy use within data centers with information about overall facility infrastructure energy consumption.

The expansion of Tivoli Monitoring is part of IBM's Software for a Greener World initiative announced this week at the company's Pulse Conference in Orlando.

The newest version of the energy monitoring software includes historical trending and forecasting, and allows users to set power and utilization thresholds to control energy use.

IBM has also announced a number of partnerships with vendors allowing data center operators to integrate IBM software with other monitoring systems and look at energy use by both IT systems as well as non-IT systems like air conditioning, power distribution, lighting and security systems.

The partnerships with APC and TAC, Eaton, Emerson Network Power, Johnson Controls, Matrikon, OSIsoft, Siemens Building Technologies, SynapSense and VMware include a range of energy efficiency solutions, including realtime data information, overall looks at all systems using energy, virtualization and details of energy use by specific components, devices and systems.

The push for greener software is part of IBM's Project Big Green initiative, a commitment to spend $1 billion a year providing energy efficiency techniques for data centers.

The company's Software for a Greener World includes offerings that expand virtualization capabilities, support telecommuting and can reduce travel needs.
