LONDON, UK -- Rackspace Hosting has built a green data center that will use renewable biomass energy to power the facility in Slough, Berkshire.
The company completed contstruction on the converted warehouse on the Slough Trading Estate. Rackspace is installing equipment in the first data hall and is set to begin operations in June.
The United Kingdom’s largest dedicated biomass energy plant, operated by Scottish and Southern Energy, will power the 55,000-square feet center using wood chips, waste paper and fiber fuel.
“Rackspace is committed to being energy efficient and making a real and positive difference to the environment,” said Managing Director Doug Loewe in a statement. “We also recognise that customers are increasingly looking for suppliers who can help them meet their own environment related goals. By investing in this facility we continue to strive to exceed the environmental expectations of our customers while delivering their hosting needs.”
The company, which currently operates eight data centers around the world, is a member of The Green Grid and has taken steps to curb its carbon footprint. The company offers offsets to its U.S. customers to neutralize emissions related to new servers brought online. Rackspace partnered with tree planting charity ITF to offer offsets to European customers in 2006.
