PALO ALTO, Calif. -- HP Labs has launched an industry-wide initiative to slash data center carbon footprints by 75 percent.

The lab unveiled the new initiative Wednesday as part of an overarching researching drive in five areas, including sustainability. The research center also introduced two additional projects aimed at curbing data center energy use and measuring environmental impacts.

The lab’s first initiative, the Sustainable Data Center project, aims to reduce the cost of ownership and enable customers to dramatically reduce energy consumption. Researchers will study how energy is managed and used throughout the lifetime of a data center in order to develop technologies to reduce consumption while maintaining performance.

A second research initiative involves the replacement of copper-based electrical connections in IT systems with optical laser communication links to improve energy efficiency.

HP labs also plans to develop tools to measure, manage and predict the environmental impact of supply chains, business processes and manufacturing. The program consists of three components, including one where researchers will examine the commercial printing and publishing sectors to determine how sustainability-oriented technology would impact the business models with the goal of reducing emissions and resource consumption.

Another component would attempt to quantify product environmental impacts across the lifecycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life. The third component involves a sustainability hub, an open online resource to share information and data about sustainable product design.
