LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) announced several initiatives aimed at helping the electronics industry get greener.

The trade group claims its EIATRACK, a worldwide benchmark for intelligence and environmental product-oriented regulatory tracking and analysis, offers legal expertise that is worth millions. The group’s electronics waste recycling website also serves as a database of 2,000-plus recycling centers across the country.

“TIA’s investment in green initiatives provides vision and adds value for our members as the ICT industry continues to respond to worldwide environmental and regulatory issues affecting business,” said TIA's Grant Seiffert in a statement.

EIATRACK compiles information on legislation from 110 international jurisdictions throughout the world, including Asia, Europe and South America. It provides analysis from legal and technical experts across a broad range of disciplines, such as law and science.

The TIA also is rallying manufacturers for more energy efficient equipment, such as routers, switches and other types of network equipment because of the rising costs of maintaining data centers and networks, Reuters reported.

"We've made it clear to them that we need breakthroughs in those areas," John Donovan, CTO of AT&T Inc., told Reuters. "We're not going to go out and just buy features and capabilities without looking at the total cost of ownership and the environmental impacts."
