ORLANDO, Fla. -- Expanding on its year-old Data Center 3.0 initiative, Cisco has announced a number of new products and services to support virtualization in data centers. When implemented correctly, virtualization can reduce energy use and equipment needs.

Cisco's updated software programs and expanded data center services are designed to help customers virtualize application hosting services, virtualize servers and increase the virtualized performance of application switches.

The company is also offering a web-based tool, the Efficiency Assurance Program, to help customers analyze power use and create energy use benchmarks.

"Real-time collaborative applications, energy concerns and the need to achieve greater efficiency from assets are driving IT managers to transform their data centers through new technologies," said John McCool, senior vice president and general manager, Cisco Data Center, Switching and Services Group.

The new programs include Cisco Wide Area Application Services software release 4.1, Cisco Application Control Engine software release 3.1, and Cisco VFrame Data Center software release 1.2.
