More Companies Concerned With Power Efficiency, Fewer Willing to Pay for Green Tech: Survey

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The second annual survey in Rackspace's Greenspace Initiative shows that fewer companies are willing to pay extra to work with green vendors or to pay for green services.

Many of the issues covered in the "Rackspace Green Survey: June 2008" saw slight changes, with the overall trend of companies moving away from green IT.

Fewer companies are willing to give up server performance in favor of fewer emissions. In 2007, 51 percent of companies surveyed said they would sacrifice five to 10 percent of their server performance to lower their emissions, but only 30 percent of the companies in the 2008 survey would do the same. Sixty-three percent said they would not sacrifice any performance at all.

Also, those who said they would pay five to 10 percent more to work with green vendors dropped 11 percentage points to 41 percent. And more companies than last year also said they would not pay a premium for renewable energy, recycling, carbon offsets and other green services.

However, more companies said they are addressing or looking into how to address power efficiency, an increase of seven percentage points to 69 percent. And more said green vendors are important, but not part of overall business strategy. Most companies would choose a green vendor over a non-green one only if the prices were the same.

The 2008 survey was sent to about 3,000 Rackspace customers, and over six percent, or more than 180, responded. Last year the survey was distributed to 3,800 customers, and 10 percent, or 380, responded.
