EGHAM, UK -- Of 27 tech trends that Gartner analysts predict will make a major impact on business IT operations in coming years, three of the most promising offer environmental benefits to companies as well as advantages in efficiency and innovation.
The 2008 "Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies," authored by Gartner VP Jackie Fenn, pinpointed green IT, video teleconferencing and cloud computing as trends to watch; also on list of hyped technologies are social networking services and microblogging platforms like Twitter.
"Along with broader societal pressure for environmentally sustainable solutions, IT has the opportunity -- and in many cases, a requirement -- to improve the 'greenness' of its own activities," Fenn wrote of green IT practices, "as well as to contribute to broader company and industry environmental initiatives."
The trends were chosen for their ability to to "have a transformational impact" on businesses in the coming years, and as a result are on a list of tools IT managers and tech planners should strongly consider adopting.
The quick improvements in quality of video teleconferencing services put that technology on the list; Fenn cites high-end offerings from HP, Cisco, Teliris and others as standing out for their quality as replacements for face-to-face meetings.
Fenn adds to the list cloud computing, where some or all elements of a company's hardware and software are stored remotely, often by a third party like Google or Amazon, for its promise to let companies manage their operations as efficiently as possible. Cloud computing also offers some environmental benefits as well as economic ones: by combining a wide array of computing needs under one roof, companies can bring their hardware utilization closer to 100 percent, and maximize the efficiency of those systems through virtualization and other optimizations.
Fenn's complete writeup of the hottest, most-hyped trends to watch is posted on Gartner.com.
