SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- In addition to using 1/16th the energy of traditional desktop computers, thin clients can require less maintenance and easier management for businesses of all sizes, according to a white paper released today.

"Think Thin to Go Green," the paper released by Salt Lake City-based I-O Corporation, shows how the use of thin clients can boost a company's green IT initiatives through energy savings and related emissions reductions, as well as using virtualized clients to further expand performance of the machines.

I-O Corporation, which is promoting its own line of ProEdge thin clients, explains in the white paper that a company employing 100 thin clients can spend just $297 per year powering those machines, while the same number of PCs will run up $4,973 in energy bills.

The white paper also offers examples of how CIOs and IT managers can implement a thin client strategy easily and efficiently, and outlines a case study of how thin clients fit in to a county library's green building plan.

Green Benefits of Thin Clients Outlined in New White Paper

This is not really a whitepaper - more an advertising blurb. Claims sixteenfold energy savings for thin-clients over desktops - does not account for the additional server load required in such an environment. Not scientific.

Ho hum. I gave them my email address to download the paper. More fool me.

You are correct

After reviewing the Whitepaper myself - it is true that the additional power cost for Servers is not included in the study. However, there are thousands of organizations implementing virtual desktops with new Server Hardware that utilizes VMWare, Parallels, Citrix, or Microsoft and they decide to keep their PC infrastructure in place because they want to "preserve their PC Desktop investment". They don't realize that by choosing to "Preserve" their PC infrastructure investment, it will ultimately cost them a more over time in power consumption than if they replaced the PC's in that infrastructure with Thin Clients (as outlined in the white paper or advertisement or whatever you want to call it). And don't forget the IT maintenenace costs saved by eliminating PC's in that type of environment as well.
