MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Eighteen months into a 24-month sustainability initiative, analytics and decision-management company Fair Isaac has made major gains in cutting IT hardware needs, halving energy use and cutting paper needs down significantly.

The company is looking at three main targets for focusing its efforts: IT energy efficiency, telecommuting, and reducing paper usage. But the end result is going to be a leaner, greener and more cost-efficient organization.

Three-quarters of the way through their sustainability initiative, Fair Isaac has cut their printing costs by 50 percent, which it says will save the company $740,000 per year. They achieved this goal in party by using double-sided and 4-up printing, and as a result they've printed 8 million fewer pages of paper in the past six month, and have eliminated 14 printers from their offices -- a reduction of 50 percent.

But through upgrades and consolidation of server hardware, the company is also dramatically dropping the amount of IT floor space they need for operations. Starting from 46,000 square feet of data centers, server rooms and network centers, the company has already cut back to 31,000 square feet, and by 2010 intends to need just 16,000 square feet. In the process, Fair Isaac has eliminated the need for 2,400 servers, 300 other network devices, 150 network routers, and more.

Next steps include further reductions in paper usage, with an end goal of 80 percent reductions from where they were at the beginning of the initiative. The company will also plan to replace all of their processing technology that's over five years old, and incorporate building and water management controls at its facilities to save on electricity and water costs.
