WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With the release of the third draft specifications for an Energy Star rating for servers, the EPA indicates that it is just months away from putting its stamp of approval on the most energy efficient devices.
The new draft sets targets for energy used by idling servers, and follows the release earlier this year of the SPECpower_ssj2008 benchmark for detailing the performance-to-power-used ratio for servers running Java applications.
When the new Energy Star ratings are released around February 1, 2009, they will be limited to non-blade servers (the benchmarking process can't run on blade systems at this point), and servers with up to four processor sockets. The EPA has already said that it is planning to release more comprehensive "Tier 2" specifications in October 2010.
