WESTBOROUGH, Mass. -- Starting next year, HP will start offering laptop batteries that can last three years without degrading.

Batteries using the Sonata battery cell, developed by Massachusetts-based Boston-Power, will be an option for select new laptops and also available as replacements for existing batteries.

Boston-Power says Sonata-powered batteries can be recharged to full capacity more than 1,000 times (about three years if charged once a day) without losing any capacity. As laptop batteries are discharged and recharged, their capacity starts to fade, shortening how long they can last before needing another charge. Boston-Power's batteries can stay like-new about three times longer than current batteries.

Although many casual laptop users might not charge their laptops once a day, the battery is being aimed more at business users, and also touts being able to charge up to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes.

HP's Enviro Series laptop batteries, which will include Sonata's cells, will come with a three-year warranty.

Earlier this year Boston-Power announced a third round of venture financing that brought in $45 million - making the total amount it raised $68 million - allowing the company to more than triple production of its battery technology, and the company has been working with HP for about three years.
