Lenovo launched a new service arm Tuesday that aims to help businesses manage electronics waste.

Lenovo Asset Recovery Services will offer U.S. and Canadian businesses a slew of options for end-of-life technology equipment, such as computer take-back, data destruction, refurbishment and recycling. Lenovo will destroy data on equipment using standards set by the U.S. Department of Defense. The company also will conduct value assessment, data encryption and on-site deinstallation.

Lenovo also has taken an interest in the design of technology equipment to make it more energy efficienct and recyclable. Part of the old equipment could find new life as park benches, concrete filler or automobile parts, the company said. In 2007, Lenovo properly disposed of more than 38 million pounds of Lenovo-owned or customer-owned equipment.

“We’re focused on greening the entire lifecycle of our computers, from increasing the lifespan and designing for upgradeability to improving energy efficiency,” said Fran O-Sullivan, Lenovo’s product group senior vice president.

The service will be available June 30 to companies that have little support for multi-national operations.

The unwanted equipment could even generate a revenue stream for businesses, Lenovo said. In addition to donating old electronics, customers may receive up to 15 percent of the product’s original sales price.
